How to Calculate the Optimal Odorizer Tank Size for Your Gas Pipeline System?

Odorant Tank Claculation

Calculating the size of odorant storage tanks involves considering various factors to ensure a sufficient supply. The key factors include gas flow, odorant injection rate , hours of operation per day, days of operation per year, and the odorant density. These factors collectively contribute to determining the appropriate tank size. For example, by multiplying the gas flow, odorant injection rate, hours per day, and days per year, one can calculate the total amount of odorant needed.

Example Calculation: Given:

  • Gas flow = 1,500,000 scf/h

  • Injection rate = 0.75 lb/mmscf

  • Odorant density = 6.76 lb/gallon

Gallons per day=((1,500,000×24×0.75)/1,000,000)6.76=3.99 gal/day

Annual daily usage=365×3.99=1,456 gallons/year

Recommended tank size=1,456×1.20=1,747 gallons

Therefore, the recommended tank size would be around1,747 gallons to ensure an adequate supply of odorant for the given gas flow and injection rate.
